Maximizing interaction with mobile devices: quarts into pint pots

If a device is to be portable it must be small. However, the smaller a device is, the less physical room there is on it. This in turn limits the amount of space available for input and output mechanisms In this paper we present the results of a number of small studies which have investigated making the most of the input/output facilities of miniature devices. These cover: • data to guide the design of the maximal use of simple buttons; • design of the information to be presented on a small screen; • optimizing alphabetical input on a numeric keypad and • automatic contraction of textual output for small displays.
